GringoMundo Top Music Picks

Mana could be the most famous Mexican rock band of all time.  In 2000 they joined Santana on tour after lead singer Fher composed Corazon Espinado for Supernatural, but they've always been able to stand on their own.  One of their best works is 1992's Donde jugaran los ninos.

Argentinean band Enanitos Verdes (the little green dwarves) earned a 1998 grammy nomination for best latin rock album for "Tracción Acústica."  Their current album, Pescado Original, may be even better.

From Madrid, Alejandro Sanz's disc El Tren de los Momentos is a big hit, but try his MTV Unplugged album for a phenomenal display.

Dance and Dense DensoFor a rougher side of latin music, and to keep laughing at the occasional gringo-latino friction, check out Molotov and their international hit "Frijolero."

Unfortunately, Celia Cruz died in 2003 shortly before her 80th birthday, but she will always be remembered as the Queen of Salsa.  This Cuban-born legend's album "Celia Cruz and Friends" is a great pick-up even if you can't dance Salsa.

Columbia's Juanes has achieved as a solo artist what Mana achieved as a band.  After leaving his original group, Ekhymosis, early in his career, his back-to-back monster discs entitled Un Dia Normal and Mi Sangre have proved that Juanes is here to stay.

Gloria Estefan has bounced back and forth between English and Spanish releases since her days in Miami Sound Machine, but this Cuban born artist is already considered a legend by many, and her hit song "Hoy" on her 2003 Album Unwrapped is a modern classic.

Special Feature:  Heriberto Gonzalez

One of Puerto Rico's most famous artists is Heriberto Gonzalez.  In 1976, he co-founded the well-known group "Alborada" which recorded an album by the same name along with singer Danny Rivera.  In it, he served as composer, singer, guitarist and designed this picture on the cover.  This group, along with the album cover, have left a distinct footprint on the history of Puerto Rican music.

In commemoration of the 30 year anniversary of this project, the artist has created a signed and numbered limited edition of 100 copies, accompanied by their certificate of authenticity.  (A portion of the artwork is featured on the cover to the right.)  The image measures 15" by 30", with a frame of 27.25" by 41".  All materials used are free of acid and a special glass offers protection from ultraviolet rays.  Prices are $700 (framed) and $500 (unframed).  For information, email us and we'll place you in touch with the artist.

You may think Julieta Venegas is new on the music scene, but it's been almost 10 years since she recorded her first solo albumn, Aqui.  Born in Tijuana, Mexico, Limon y Sal is her second albumn to gain widespread popularity, featuring hits such as Me Voy.

Ricky Martin has grown quite a bit since he was a 12 year-old member of Menudo.  Continuing to reinvent himself, while remaining the same latin sex symbol with an incredible voice, pick up Historia to listen to some of his greatest hits--in Spanish.

Over the past 20 years, La Ley has seen band members come and go, but the current composition--the group that won a grammy for their MTV Unplugged--is well worth a listen.

Born Shakira Isabel Mebarak to Columbian mother and Lebanese dad, this former wannabe model is perhaps the single greatest force in latin music.  Try her 1995 Pies Descalzos to hear what she sounded like before Gringos listened to her.

Argentinean-born Diego Torres has been getting great reviews for his hit song Abriendo Caminos, and if you like that albumn (Andando), pick up his 1995 MTV Unplugged for a great live sound.

Wait, this girl ain't latin!  Nelly Furtado spent most her life in Canada, but is actually of Portugese descent.  Her most recent album, Loose, earned its mention on Latin Flavors for the song "No Hay Iqual," featuring reggaeton star René Pérez (Calle 13), the video for which was shot in Puerto Rico's prettiest slum, La Perla.

If you haven't seen the 1999 film Buena Vista Social Club, watch it today and you'll buy the soundtrack tomorrow.  Known for raising the popularity of Cuban music in mainstream America, the CD features greats such as Ibrahim Ferrer and Compay Segundo.

Danny Rivera and Alborada were recognized as the leading example of the new wave of folkloric music of the 1970’s.
