Drinks
There
are literally hundreds of latin drinks enjoyed throughout the world,
and this page in no way is an attempt to list them all. What
this page does do is offer what we feel is the best "recipe" for the
given drink. Just like the recipes in the
food section,
these recipes are not posted without making the exact recipe and
sampling the finished product (in some cases, many many times!).
If you
have a preferred recipe for one of these drinks, or another latin
beverage (alcoholic or non), please
email us. We'll whip up your recipe, and after we enjoy
it, we'll post it along with your name.

Tequila and the Margarita
TEQUILA: Uniting Gringos and Latinos since
1873! Perhaps the most
perfect liquor in the world, Tequila is distilled from the plant
blue agave.
3 tips for Gringos:
1. Lose the salt and lime/lemon, and sip
your tequila like a true Mexicano.
2. Ask for 100% agave tequila...we recommend
Jose Cuervo Reserva de la Familia
and
Corralejo Reposado.
3. 100% agave tequila won't give you a
hangover because it's double distilled. So, when making
margaritas, don't waste your money on fine tequila because the
sugars and other liquors in margaritas will give you a hangover
anyway.

Pina Colada
One of the easiest drinks to make, and it tastes ten times better
when you don't use the bottled mixers...
Combine and blend:
- 2 ounces Coco Lopez Cream of Coconut
- 2 ounces pineapple juice
- 1 1/2 ounces rum
- 1 cup ice

Mojito
Try this recipe from
Bacardi
for one of the best mojitos we've ever tried.
Ingredients:
- 1 1/2 ounces rum (Bacardi recommends Bacardi, of course)
- 12 fresh spearmint leaves
- 1/2 lime
- 7 ounces club soda
- 2 tablespoons simple syrup (or 4 tsp sugar)
Muddle mint leaves in a tall glass. Cover with simple syrup
or sugar. Fill glass with ice, then add rum and a splash of
club soda. Stir well and garnish with lime wedge. The
key to a mojito, if you use sugar, is ensuring it dissolves into the
rum and club soda.

Cuba Libre con Barrilito or Havana Club Rum
The Cuba Libre is known more commonly to Gringos as a "rum and
coke," but the Cuba Libre includes a dash of lime juice (often a
slice of lime). One of the simplest drinks around, it is most
commonly made using a 2:1 or 3:1 coke-to-rum ratio.
Any rum will do when making a Cuba Libre, because to most
drinkers, the coke overpowers the rum so why use a $40 bottle when a
$10 bottle will do the trick? However, if you want to try
slightly higher quality rum, we recommend Ron de Barrilito from
Puerto Rico. This rum isn't too expensive ($15-$20 bottle),
and is delicious just sipped over ice. Another delicious rum,
and the rum that many experts claim was used to make the world's
first Cuba Libre, is Havana Club. Due to the US-Cuba trade
embargo, it's tough to find state-side, but it can easily be found
in Mexico, Canada and in duty free shops world-wide.

Cucaracha
This tasty beverage can be made as a regular drink, but is most
commonly served as a flaming shot. Did we mention that you
drink it with a straw? Some recipes will substitute vodka for
tequila, but why drink vodka if you have tequila?
Combine:
- 2 parts tequila
- 1 part Kahlua

For the perfect MARGARITA, combine:
It's so good you'll never use bottled margarita mix again!

Coco Lopez cream of coconut is the key ingredient in a true Pina
Colada.

Bacardi Rum from Catano, Puerto Rico leads the world in Rum exports.
It remains one of the world's best, in spite of mass production.

Two great rums, Havana Club and Barrilito. Finding
Havana Club stateside may be a little more difficult.
Light on fire and drink quickly with a plastic straw. This
drink can also be sipped over ice. In fact, if you use one
part tequila and one part kahlua, and add a little lime, you'll be
enjoying a Brave Bull.
