Is Gringo a Four Letter Word? Absolutely Not! Gringo is derived from griego, which is Spanish for "Greek," the proverbial name given to an unintelligible language, like in Shakespearean "it was Greek to me." False Meanings Gringo did not originate during the Spanish-American War because Americans were wearing green coats, or because Mexicans were yelling "Green Go!" This is an invented explanation.
